Description:
Alexander Black House & Cultural Center presents A Conversation with Kathleen Grissom and Leah Weiss on Thursday, September 14, 2017.

Join us for a conversation with two accomplished Virginia authors as we celebrate the release of “If the Creek Don’t Rise,” the debut novel from Leah Weiss.

Born in North Carolina and raised in Virginia, Leah Weiss describes her writing as “southern and musical and best when read aloud… always about people who are self-sufficient and hard working with humble dreams.”

“If the Creek Don’t Rise” tells the story of Sadie Blue, a young wife and new mother living in remote Appalachia, desperate to make her own mark on the world. This intimate insight into a fiercely proud, tenacious community unfolds through the voices of the forgotten folks of Baines Creek. With a colorful cast of characters that each contributes a new perspective, “If the Creek Don’t Rise” is a debut novel bursting with heart, honesty and homegrown grit.

In her review of “If the Creek Don’t Rise,” bestselling author Kathleen Grissom says “This one nearly broke my heart. With deeply human characters I will not easily forget, Weiss captures the fierce pull of desperation and the formidable power of hope. An impressive debut from a talent to watch.”

A reception begins at 5:00 PM, the formal program starts at 5:30 PM.
