The Lyric Theatre presents their Live at The Lyric series with The Marcus King Band and special guests Erin & The Wildfire on Thursday, January 31, 2019.

The Marcus King Band is based in Greenville, South Carolina and plays soul-influenced psychedelic southern rock. Led by songwriter, guitarist, singer and bandleader Marcus King who's only his twenties. He may be young, but King’s eloquent songs, expressive guitar playing, and ecstatically soulful singing mark this gifted, thoughtful young prodigy as a force to be reckoned with.

Raised in Greenville, South Carolina, King was brought up on the blues, playing shows as a pre-teen sideman with his father, bluesman Marvin King, who himself was the son of a regionally-known guitarist—before striking out on his own. Going beyond the sonic textures of his acclaimed 2015 debut album, Soul Insight; The Marcus King Band broadens his sound, touching upon everything from funky R&B to Southern soul and Americana in the process. His band gets in on the action too, stacking the songs with blasts of swampy brass, a lock-step rhythm section and swirling organ. Ever the multi-tasker, King bounces between several instruments, handling electric and acoustic guitar as well as pedal and lap steel while driving each track home with his soulful, incendiary voice.

Marcus King doesn’t strive for authenticity, he never had to—it’s busting out of his DNA in every note he plays and every word he sings. This focused, firmly rooted artist isn’t just perpetuating the proud legacy of American rock and soul music, he and his great band are adding their own eloquent chapter to that rich narrative.

Erin & The Wildfire is a Charlottesville-based band that has been steadily carving out a reputation for themselves in recent years as one of the most captivating live acts to come out of Central Virginia since their formation in 2012. Fronted by powerhouse vocalist and Fincastle native Erin Lunsford, the band has been making waves throughout Virginia stirring up their unique sonic melting pot of rock, soul, funk, and blues.

The group's striking sound, goofy charm, and relentless work ethic has propelled them to some of the Commonwealth's biggest stages, including a main stage spot at 2014's Lockn Festival, three appearances at Floydfest 2015, and back-to-back performances at the 2014 and 2015 Festy Experience.
