The Blacksburg Newcomers Club presents their March meeting on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at the Luther Memorial Lutheran Church.

"Only you can prevent forest fires!" Sound familiar? Does it remind you of a famous bear named Smokey? While 95% of adults and 77% of children recognize Smokey's name, they may not recognize the name, George Annis, Acting Recreation Program Director for the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests.

If, however, you attend the Blacksburg Newcomers' Club, you'll have the opportunity to meet George and learn about these national forests that literally are in our backyards and within a two-hour drive for over 10 million people.

So if you thought Smokey the Bear and Fire Prevention was all the U.S. Forest Service was about, don't miss hearing George Annis. You'll discover how the Forest Service fulfills its mission "to provide the greatest amount of good for the greatest amount of people in the long run."

There is no cost for guests attending the meeting. Membership dues are $25.00 a year and include participation in interest groups.

No matter how long you've lived in the area since birth or you've just moved in, the Blacksburg Newcomers' Club welcomes all residents of the New River Valley.

Free babysitting is available for pre-school children ages 6 months and older.
