As part of Radford's 2017 Mary Draper Ingles Weekend, Glencoe Mansion, Museum & Gallery presents Mary's Story & History of Radford on Saturday, June 17, 2017 and Sunday, June 18, 2017.
At the Glencoe Mansion, visitors can learn more about Mary Draper Ingles through displays, artwork and a video. The Glencoe Mansion will provide living history demonstrations that cover both the 18th and 19th centuries and include a display of children’s toys, a look at how women supported life in Colonial days through such activities as weaving.
On Saturday, reenactors from the 51st Virginia Infantry, Wharton’s unit during the Civil War, will be provide an encampment on mansion grounds.
The post-Civil War mansion which was home to General Gabriel C. Wharton and his wife Nannie Radford Wharton features the history of the Whartons and 19th century life, Native Americans, and the railroad. The site also houses an art gallery.
Admission is free.
Books, commemorative prints by acclaimed artist P. Buckley Moss and other souvenirs will be available in the gift shop.
Visitors also will want to tour the Mary Draper Ingles Cultural Heritage Park that is adjancent to Glencoe Mansion and includes a bronze statue of the heroine and four modern sculptures honoring her epic journey.
