Description:
The Virginia Tech School of Performing Arts presents Virginia Tech Wind Ensemble and Symphony Band Concert "Musical Vignettes" on Sunday, October 8, 2017 at the Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech's Anne and Ellen Fife Theatre.

Join the Virginia Tech Wind Ensemble and Symphony Band for an afternoon concert led by conductor Jonathan Caldwell.

Edgar Allan Poe wrote nearly seventy short stories, but only completed one novel. Frédéric Chopin never composed a symphony, but did produce well over 100 short pieces for solo piano. Leonard da Vinci’s Mona Lisa only measures 30 inches by 21 inches, smaller than three pieces of notebook paper taped together.

Some artists just work better with smaller forces or in smaller spaces. While band music tends to be much shorter than orchestral music, composers who write for band often find ingenuous ways to compose vivid musical vignettes into relatively short timespans. This program is a celebration of vibrant concision.

Mason Bates’s Chicago 2012 is inspired by particle physics while Wayne Oquin’s A Solemn Place is an arrangement of his a cappella choir composition “O magnum mysterium.” Matthew Browne’s Kill Screen is a musical representation of Polybius, an urban legend about an addictive video game, and VT faculty member Betsy Crone is featured on Charles Rochester Young’s dramatic flute concerto. The music of Percy Grainger, the king of the musical vignette, ends this afternoon of musical short stories.

Tickets can be purchased online, in person at the Moss Arts Center Box Office Monday-Friday from 10 am - 5:30 pm and Saturday 10 am - 4 pm and by phone at 540-231-5300.
