Description:
Office of First Year Experiences and the Virginia Tech Common Book Project present "An Evening with Wes Moore" on Thursday, November 2, 2017 in Burruss Auditorium.
Wes Moore will discuss his life, part of which is detailed in his book, “The Other Wes Moore,” Virginia Tech’s 2017-18 Common Book.
Wes Moore is a youth advocate, Army combat veteran, Rhodes Scholar, White House Fellow, social entrepreneur, and host of Beyond Belief on the Oprah Winfrey Network. He is committed to helping our nation’s youth overcome hindering circumstances. His first book, New York Times bestseller "The Other Wes Moore", tells a story of two boys born with the same name, similar circumstances, living in the same city. One grew up to be a Rhodes Scholar, decorated veteran, White House Fellow, and business leader, while the other serves a life sentence for felony murder. In April, Moore was appointed the CEO of the Robin Hood Foundation, the largest poverty-fighting organization in New York City.
The event is open to the public and admission is free.
The Common Book Project began at Virginia Tech in 1998 to enrich the first-year experience and create a sense of community by allowing students to discuss and learn from the same book. The goals of the project are to convey a message of welcome to all incoming first-year and transfer students, fostering a connection to Virginia Tech values; to stimulate academic and intellectual engagement within and beyond the classroom; and to foster critical thinking and interdisciplinary learning. Faculty members who teach those students are encouraged to integrate the Common Book into their curriculum through class discussions and projects.
The author speaking engagement is sponsored and organized by the Office of First Year Experiences and the Virginia Tech Common Book Project.
