The Lifelong Learning Institute at Virginia Tech presents an Author Talk with Beth Macy titled "Get Out of Your Zip Code" on Friday, February 2, 2018 at Warm Hearth Village Center.
In her presentation “Get Out of Your Zip Code", Beth Macy will talk about the importance of storytelling in building community across racial and socioeconomic lines. An engaging speaker who "follows what moves her," Macy shares both her heart and work with audiences.
Beth Macy is a New York Times-bestselling author and known for her books "Dopesick", "Factory Man" and "Truevine" and "Raising Lazarus". Her work has been recognized with numerous awards and she has repeatedly been on the New York Times Bestseller List.
"Dopesick" was made into a Emmy-winning Hulu series, on which Macy served as executive producer and co-writer. Her follow-up book, "Raising Lazarus", tells the story of the third wave of the crisis, driven by the introduction of new, highly addictive opioids such as fentanyl. Outsiders, underdogs and the importance of hope are key features of her work. Her books reflect a deep respect for the stories of marginalized people and communities, dogged persistence in her research, and a gift for telling complicated stories in a compelling way.
Macy’s work as a newspaper reporter, mostly at The Roanoke Times won more than two dozen national journalism awards including a Nieman Fellowship for Journalism at Harvard. She won a J. Anthony Lukas Prize for "Factory Man" and an L.A. Times Book Prize for "Dopesick". All of her books were instant New York Times bestsellers.
Her work has also been featured in Oprah magazine, PARADE, American Journalism Review, Salon, the Christian Science Monitor and "The Best Newspaper Writing" anthology.
