Description:
Science on Tap New River Valley presents "23andMe for You? The Promise and Peril of Genetic Testing" on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at Rising Silo Brewery in Blacksburg, VA.
Extract DNA (yours or from a strawberry) to see what it looks like and geneticist Deborah Good will explain how personal genetic testing works and then launch a discussion and Q&A about the ethics of personal genetic testing.
Attendees will have the option of either extracting your own DNA from your spit or extracting DNA from strawberries. Either way, you'll get to see a stringy blob of DNA. If you want to see and extract your own DNA, you will need to not eat or drink for 2 to 3 hours before you spit so when you get to the event on Thursday, don't order a beer or food until after you've spit in a cup.
This event is free and open to the public.
Science On Tap New River Valley community celebrates scientific thought and explores new discoveries through monthly events with a featured researcher. We kick off the event with games, comedy, or other fun things. Then, an invited guest researcher demos their research. And then we'll discuss, ask questions, learn together, and mingle.
