Description:
The Virginia Tech Perspective Gallery presents the Opening Reception for Walt Hewes Retrospective on Friday, October 26, 2018.
Meet the artist and view the realistic paintings and drawing he has created over the past 40 years. All works exhibited are borrowed from private collections and have not been shown together before. The exhibit highlights Walt's connection to place, with many familiar scenes from the New River Valley.
Walt Hewes is a preeminent artist who draws and paints vistas and abandoned places of the New River Valley en plein air, a French term meaning “outside.” A longtime resident of Giles County, Virginia, Hewes studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Art. During his student-life, Walt often took part in conversations with Andrew Wyeth, America’s best-known 20th century landscape painter. Walt’s work takes the viewer down long, lonely backroads, open fields, and abandoned buildings in Central Appalachia. In his work, you will find the beauty, mystery and magic that the Alleghany Mountains hold.
Admission is free and open to the public.
The exhibit runs October 23 – December 15, 2018.
Refreshments will be served and Eric Lanoue will perform original acoustic music.
Perspective Gallery is located in the second floor gallery in Virginia Tech’s Squires Student Center at 290 College Avenue in Blacksburg, VA.
