The Southwest Region of Special Olympics Virginia presents their annual Basketball Tournament on Saturday, February 2, 2019 with games at Cassell Coliseum.

200 Special Olympic athletes on 20 Special Olympics teams from around Virginia will be competing for a chance to go to the State Championships. The teams play Unified basketball. Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding.

Volunteer 2 Cheer for Southwest Virginia's most inspiring athletes at the Southwest Regional Basketball Tournament. Individuals and groups are needed to host our teams and cheer them on. There is both a morning shift (9:00 am - 1:00 pm) and afternoon shift (12:00-5:00 pm).

Volunteers will be assigned a team to cheer and support. Each team will play two games. Our teams feel respected and celebrated! The fans will form a "home team crowd" and help host the teams and cheer them on. Each team plays two games. This helps ensure that all athletes feel respected and celebrated!

The annual Torch Lighting Ceremony will begin around 1:00 pm as the Special Olympics athletes parade into Cassell Coliseum. Additionally, the Healthy Athletes- Health Promotions event throughout the day.

Note: Walkin-ins are also welcome on the day of the event.
