Description:
Enjoy a night of music with Jon Collin, Eight Point Star, A. Talmage and Bob Canter in concert on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at Odd Fellows Building Lodge #20 on Wilson Avenue in Blacksburg, VA.
British abstract guitarist Jon Collin, on a rare USA tour, brings his musical seance on a deep-listening visit to Blacksburg, with locals Eight Point Star, A. Talmage, and Bob Canter turning out to welcome him with their own musicks.
This should be a night of atmospherics, of spirit-raising new sounds in the lovely and venerable Odd Fellows Lodge #20.
Jon Collin is a British abstract guitarist. His music tends toward the gorgeous and spacious, with lots of room left for whatever sounds are around him, be they wind, water or urban traffic, and for the inspiration and interaction they provoke.
"The second volume of Water and Rock Music by British guitarist Jon Collin is another solid gambol in the outdoors. For much of this it sounds almost as though Mr. Collin is wearing a pair of hip waders and is up to his ass in a stream, casting for notes the way Hemingway casted for trout. His string bending recalls Loren Connors at points, but he has a manual approach to filigree Loren has never displayed. Notes bend and hover, but they also flutter, and the combination of sounds is not quite like anything that’s preceded it.... Jon’s music works as a series of comments on sound and questions about the physical space in which it’s created, but like any good philosopher he knows when to leave a sense of mystery hanging in the air."

https://earlymusicrecords.wordpress.com/Eight Point Star is a New River Valley-Roanoke collective gathered around old-time and improvisational fiddler Mike Gangloff and bluesy fingerstyle guitarist Matt Peyton that draws on traditional and international roots to create a sound all their own.
With hardanger fiddle, hurdy-gurdy, banjos, gongs, singing bowls and lots more, this is a mostly acoustic sound, but with Matt's theremin and other electronics occasionally rising to the surface sometimes from the Golden Age jazz or Great American Songbook classics that Cara grew up singing, sometimes from the urgent, raw blues that Matt has pursued and sometimes from pure, free improvisation aimed at creating an in-the-moment symphony. This is extended Appalachian music with a story of its own to tell.
Solid, bluesy fingerstyle guitar and soaring, scratchy hardanger fiddle combine for duo explorations; a search for beauty.

Bob Canter: A flood of songs that has overflowed the banks and need to be heard.
Doors are at 7:30 pm, music starts promptly at 8:00 pm.
Donations very appreciated, both for Jon, who is on a rare USA tour, and for the ongoing restoration of the hall.
