Description:
Floyd Country Store presents the April 2019 Floyd Radio Show with Bill and The Belles, the Whitetop Mountain Band and Bertram Levy on Saturday, April 6, 2019 starting at 7:30 pm.

Live from The Floyd Country Store in the heart of downtown Floyd, Virginia! The Floyd Country Store brings together a new variety show every month. A series of guest hosts will perform original radio plays, comedy bits, ads, jingles, music and more. Each show features the finest old-timey musical acts, from storytelling banjo players to flatpicking guitarists to hard-driving string bands.

With striking three-part harmonies and masterful instrumentation, Bill and the Belles skillfully breathe new life into the sounds of early country music. At the foothills of the Blue Ridge and the forefront of old time music, Bill and the Belles (Johnson City, Tennessee) continue to further the music traditions of their region. From sentimental Southern ballads to the popular songs of Tin Pan Alley to regional fiddle breakdowns, a Bill and the Belles show is a celebration of the diversity country music once represented.

Lifelong musicians Kris Truelsen, Grace Van’t Hof, Kalia Yeagle, and Karl Zerfas bring to the stage an uplifting show unlike any other, full of humor, high spirits, and all-around revelry. It’s clear this group shares a rare musical connection and deep love for the music, and their excitement is contagious. Bill and the Belles are hitting the road with fervor, eager to share their music with new audiences. They continue to play alongside America’s top country and roots music artists as the resident band for the historic radio program Farm and Fun Time presented by Radio Bristol and the Birthplace of Country Music.

The Whitetop Mountain Band is a family-based band that originated in the 1940s. They have deep roots in mountain music and their members have done much to preserve the Whitetop region’s style of old time fiddling and banjo picking. Their performances are also noted for their versatility, often containing blues, classic country, honky tonk pieces and traditional bluegrass. They are a tour de force of playing, singing, and dance, and they are gifted entertainers as well.

They are one of the busiest groups in the Appalachians, performing concerts, festivals, competitions and for dances in America and abroad in the United Kingdom and Australia. They have been featured in many books, magazines and TV/radio shows about Appalachian music such as "The Guide to the Crooked Road", "Strings of Life”, Country Music Television, Travel Channel, PBS and more.

Bertram was one of the original members of the North Carolina based Hollow Rock String Band in the 1960’s. The band played only music learned directly from the old-time fiddlers in North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. Their 1968 album is credited with launching the traditional American fiddle music revival.

Imbued with a mission to keep the music alive, Bertram has spent over 50 years spreading the Southern fiddle revival to generations of old time musicians, including his own young daughter, Madeline, with whom he will be performing and teaching in the UK. In 1997 he created the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes, which has become the model for traditional music festivals throughout the United States.

Widely known for his unique “piedmont swing” banjo style, a crossover of bluegrass and old-time claw-hammer played on nylon strings, Bertram’s solo album “That Old Gut Feeling” is considered one of the great banjo recording classics. He has also recorded the music of Henry Reed with Alan Jabbour and Henry’s son James and the music of Surry County with Kirk Sutphin. He is a powerful dance fiddler and author of several anglo concertina tutors including his latest “American Fiddle Styles for the Anglo Concertina”. His previous visits to the UK were in the early 1980s and now in his 75th year Bertram returns to pass on his music to the British friends of old time music.

He has appeared in major festivals throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe and has been featured in over a dozen albums and film scores. In addition has been highlighted in several national broadcasts of “The Prairie Home Companion” show with Garrison Keillor. In 1996 he was invited by the Mexican government to represent the United States in the Juan Reynosa festival that toured Mexico.
