Description:
Native at Virginia Tech presents their Third Annual Spring Pow Wow on Saturday, April 6, 2019 on the Graduate Life Center Lawn.
Schedule:
• 11:00 am: Doors Open
• 12:00 pm: Grand Entry
The Spring Pow Wow includes Native American dancing, drumming, singing, food and artisan vendors. The celebration attracts members from tribes in Virginia, such as the Monacan Indian Nation in Amherst County and persons of all persuasions. The MC will be Joey Crutchfield and the AD Rufus Elliot. The Southern Drum will be performed by Smokey River and the Northern Drum by Young Blood Singers.
The event offers the campus and local community an opportunity to learn more about indigenous cultures and the land we occupy. In particular, both the summit and the powwow offer acknowledgment of the Tutelo/Monacan people, who are the traditional custodians of the land, water, and air that Virginia Tech consumes.
A Native American powwow is a ceremonial time of renewal and a way for Indigenous people to honor a spiritual connection to their ancestors. It is a gathering to socialize, dance, pray, and celebrate, but where each tribe or individual ascribes personalized meaning.
The event is free and open to the public. Folding chairs and blankets are encouraged for seating.
In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held in the Old Dominion Ballroom within the Squires Student Center on the campus of Virginia Tech.
Native at Virginia Tech is dedicated to advancing the visibility of American Indians and other Indigenous peoples on campus, as well as raising an awareness of the issues that confront these diverse populations.
