Solitude at Virginia Tech presents "Experience Solitude as Contested Space: A Mountains of Music Homecoming Event" on Saturday, June 8, 2019.
Event Schedule:
• 10:00-11:00 am: Updated Building Tours with a Visit of the Fraction Family House
• 11:15-11:45 am: Introduction to the Days Events & Theme
• 11:45 am - 12:45 pm: Free Lunch with Music by Homebody Band on Solitude Porch
• 1:00-2:00 pm: Cultural Performance and Urban Dance Group on Side Patio
• 2:00-3:00 pm: Appalachian Storytelling by Kathy Coleman on Solitude Porch
• 3:00-3:45 pm: Children's Appalachian Toy-making Workshop in Tent
• 4:00-4:45 pm: The Glorylanders Gospel Singers Perform on Solitude Porch
• 5:00 pm: West African Sacred Ground Dedication at Fraction Family House Grounds
Experience historic Solitude as a "contested space" through Appalachian and African American bluegrass and gospel music, lore and dance. Also enjoy storytelling by Kathy Colemen, Children's Appalachian Toys Workshop by Kathy Colemen, free lunch with authentic and West African food, antique quilt display, spinning, weaving, chair bottom weaving and herbalists.
There will also be revised building tours in the morning expanding on the experiences of Native American and enslaved persons living on site owned by the Preston family.
Celebrate West African sacred ground dedication recognizing Virginia Tech's resolution naming the small building next to Solitude after the Fraction family who live on this site from the 1840s through the Civil War period.
Admission is free and parking is free.
