Description:
The Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech presents Dance Theatre of Harlem on Friday, September 13, 2019 to kick off the 2019/2020 performance season.

This internationally acclaimed, history-making company returns to the Moss Arts Center with a program that includes a new ballet as part of American Evolution, marking the 400th anniversary of historical and defining events in Virginia. “Passages,” which is part of a mixed repertoire program, will express in abstract the fortitude of the human spirit, celebrating the unvanquished spark within that must prevail. Join the celebration of Dance Theatre of Harlem’s historic 50th season, and be among the first to see this new work.

Now a singular presence in the ballet world, Dance Theatre of Harlem tours nationally and internationally, presenting a powerful vision for ballet in the 21st century. The 17-member, multi-ethnic company performs a forward-thinking repertoire that includes treasured classics and neoclassical works by George Balanchine and resident choreographer Robert Garland, as well as innovative contemporary works that use the language of ballet to celebrate African American culture. Through performances, community engagement, and arts education, the company carries forward Dance Theatre of Harlem’s message of empowerment through the arts for all.

Over the past 40+ years, DTH and Mitchell have received over 300 official citations, awards and honors from states, municipalities, schools, and civic organizations, including the National Medal of Arts, NYC’s Handel Medallion, a Kennedy Center Honor, the National Endowment for the Arts’ Ambassador for the Arts Award, and a National Cultural Treasure Award.
