Hotel Floyd presents a "Slide Technique and Repertoire in Standard and Open Tunings" Workshop with Scott Ainslie on Saturday, November 30, 2019.

If you have ever wanted to play slide guitar, this is the workshop for you. Scott Ainslie has been teaching slide guitar for more than 25 years. About four years ago, on impulse, he reversed the order in which I teach the core skill sets. In subsequent classes, I had large groups of people successfully making musical sounds with their slides in one class period – sounds that I had failed previously to solicit after an entire week of classes.

So, we’ll begin in standard tuning, one string at a time, mastering five new hand skills that I call ‘the keys to the kingdom of slide guitar.’ We’ll look at slide in standard tuning first and all the muting techniques necessary to make the music work without the harmonic support of open tunings. Then, having established the basics, we’ll move to open tunings. When we’re done, you’ll understand and possess the keys to the kingdom of slide guitar.

Steeped in traditional music from both sides of the color line, Scott Ainslie is a renowned acoustic blues guitarist, singer and songwriter. He learned southern old-time ballads, banjo and fiddle from senior musicians in North Carolina and West Virginia and blues from his black elders in North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia and Mississippi. His roots are deep.

Blues guitarist Scott Ainslie will present two guitar workshops on Saturday followed by the evening concert at 7:30 pm. The morning workshop is "Mississippi John Hurt" from 10:30 am to noon and the afternoon workshop is "Intro to Slide Guitar" from 1:30-3:00 pm. All events will take place at Hotel Floyd.
