Description:
The Rays of Joy series presents Elkhorn and Eight Point Star with the Blacksburg Drone Orchestra in concert on Sunday, March 8, 2020 at Odd Fellows Building Lodge #20 on Wilson Avenue in Blacksburg, VA.
Elkhorn is a mesmerizing, sound-scapey guitar duo of acoustic 12-string picker Jesse Sheppard (Philadelphia) and electric player Drew Gardner (New York), touring to support their newest album of instrumental vignettes, “The Storm Sessions,” released on the Beyond Beyond Is label.
Formed by old friends Jesse Sheppard and Drew Gardner in 2013 and naming themselves “Elkhorn” the following year, it’s the pair’s telepathic bond that has made them so much more than two dudes with guitars. With Sheppard’s rigorous 12-string acting like a meditative rhythm section for Gardner’s textured flights, the duo’s third voice emerges into a space that often borders on soulful cosmic jazz.

https://www.facebook.com/ElkhornDuoMusicEight Point Star is a New River Valley-Roanoke collective gathered around old-time and improvisational fiddler Mike Gangloff and bluesy fingerstyle guitarist Matt Peyton that draws on traditional and international roots to create a sound all their own.
With hardanger fiddle, hurdy-gurdy, banjos, gongs, singing bowls and lots more, this is a mostly acoustic sound, but with Matt's theremin and other electronics occasionally rising to the surface sometimes from the Golden Age jazz or Great American Songbook classics that Cara grew up singing, sometimes from the urgent, raw blues that Matt has pursued and sometimes from pure, free improvisation aimed at creating an in-the-moment symphony. This is extended Appalachian music with a story of its own to tell.
Solid, bluesy fingerstyle guitar and soaring, scratchy hardanger fiddle combine for duo explorations; a search for beauty.
