Description:
The Museum of Geosciences at Virginia Tech presents a public lecture "The Oldest Green Seaweed: Come and Taste One Billion Years of Evolution” on Thursday, March 5, 2020 on the campus of Virginia Tech.

Virginia Tech paleontologists have discovered the oldest green seaweed yet, over 1 billion years old! Paleobiologists from Virginia Tech recently published this discovery in "Nature Ecology" and "Evolution". This is the first presentation for the general public!

Please join us for a brief presentation about this important discovery followed by a hands-on, meet-the-scientists reception. We will have examples of ancient and modern seaweeds. We will even have some seaweed you can taste!

This just-published discovery reveals that green seaweeds were part of making ecosystems friendly to life much earlier than previously known. Dr. Qing Tang and Dr. Shuhai Xiao will explain how they made this discovery and share the importance of seaweeds in Earth's oceans. They will discuss the different types of seaweed and the evolution of seaweeds over time.

This program is appropriate for Virginia Tech students, K-12 teachers, Master Naturalists and others interested in Earth Science and the history of life.

Admission is free and preregistration with mogs@vt.edu is appreciated, but not required.

The Museum of Geosciences is located at 2062 Derring Hall in Blacksburg, VA on the campus of Virginia Tech.
