The Town of Blacksburg presents National Forest Appreciation Day on Saturday, June 27, 2020 to be celebrated at National Forests throughout the area.

If you didn’t already know that June 27th is National Forest Appreciation Day, this just might be the perfect year to make the most of this local observance in Blacksburg, Virginia. Plus Pandapas Pond in the George Washington & Jefferson National Forests is a perfect place to view nature and to escape the negative effects of the pandemic lockdown.

Although there won’t be scheduled activities for 2020, see the scavenger hunt listed below to get visitors young and old to take a closer look at their natural surroundings. You can also challenge yourself to find dragonflies in a catch-and-release activity.

Scavenger Hunt as You Walk Around the Pond:

1. Do you see a tree with a hole in it? Look at the size of the hole. What kind of animal would fit in it?

2. Find an insect. How many legs does it have?

3. Look for a yellow flower. Does it have a scent?

4. Do a bark rubbing on the back of this sheet.

5. Find a tree with moss on the trunk. Touch it to see if it is soft or rough.

6. Look for a spider and count the number of legs.

7. Find a seed pod, open it and count the seeds inside.

8. Describe a bird that you see.

9. Draw something you see in the water.
