Description:
The Handmade Music School at The Floyd Country Store presents "Documenting Local Communities" Online Workshop with Charlie Thompson on Saturday, July 18, 2020.

Stories make us human. They distill the essence of community life. They tell us where we’ve come from and give us direction on where to head from here. This workshop/discussion provides an orientation to community-based documentary work with veteran filmmaker and author, Charlie Thompson. Learn how to get started documenting local community stories. Learn how to find stories and/or let them find you, how to position yourself in a story, how to collaborate with community members, and how to help preserve vital truths that need to be told while fostering community dignity and local ownership.

Charlie Thompson is Professor of the Practice of Cultural Anthropology and Documentary at Duke University. Born in Franklin County, Virginia, Charlie lives in Durham, NC, but also returns as often as possible to a 19th-century cabin near Rocky Knob in Floyd, Virginia. He earned a PhD at UNC-Chapel Hill, and has had extensive experience outside academia, including as a community organizer and as an organic farmer. Charlie has published seven books and directed six documentary films, garnering awards, numerous screenings at film festivals, and airings on PBS.

The workshop will be presented online via Crowdcast. The suggested donation is $15.00 however any donation is appreciated.
