The Virginia Center for Civil War Studies presents the online lecture titled "America’s Original Opioid Crisis: Civil War Veterans and Opiate Addiction" on Zoom on Tuesday, October 27, 2020.

Enjoy a free lecture and discussion with Penn State postdoc Dr. Jonathan Jones. The Civil War ignited an epidemic of opiate addiction, the first in American history, and thousands of veterans struggled with drug dependency in the war’s aftermath.

This talk investigates the phenomenon of opiate addiction in the Civil War era, illuminating themes such as wartime medical conditions, ideas about pain and manhood in the nineteenth-century, and the fate of ailing Civil War veterans in the Gilded Age.
