Description: Johnson's Orchards presents The 13th Annual Horse and Hound Wine Festival on Saturday, July 8, 2017 in Bedford, VA.

Enjoy wine from some of Virginia’s finest wineries while listening to good music featuring Stone Canyon and enjoy visiting art, craft and food vendors. Virginia’s most unique wine festival has numerous events throughout the day with horses and dogs as the primary attractions such as the Parade of Horses, lure course and muskrat racing for dogs. Families will enjoy this festival because it appeals to both young and old and includes a Kiddie Korral. The festival takes place on the spacious and gracious grounds of Johnson’s Orchards & Peaks of Otter Winery with spectacular Blue Ridge mountain views.

Patriotic Opening:
At noon we will have our Patriotic Opening with the presentation of flags on horseback, pledges and anthems. This is a very impressive event.

Equine Events:
There will also be a jousting exhibition and a variety of equine demonstrations throughout the day. Carriage rides and pony rides will be offered for a nominal fee. If you don’t come as a horse-lover, you will leave as one.

Lure Coursing:
There will be a demonstration of Lure Coursing given by Laura Cormier. Lure coursing is a humane sport which recreates the chase of the hare by the pursuing hound. The "bunny" consists of strips of white plastic attached to a continuous loop line that runs through a series of pulleys to simulate the zigzag path of a rabbit on the run.

Muskrat Races:
This event uses the Jack Russell Terrier's highly developed prey drive to swim through water in pursuit of an artificial lure. Dogs of all shapes and sizes are invited to swim across the pond in pursuit of an artificial lure. There will be three divisions of competition: small, medium, and large dogs. The winner in each division will receive a trophy.

Parade of Horses:
The Horse parade will continue to be a crowd pleaser with a wide variety of horses to be exhibited.

Kiddie Korral:
Supervised activities for children include simulating rodeo games and quiet games as well throughout the day. Supervision will be provided by the staff and volunteers of Brook Hill Farm Rehabilitation and Rescue.

Tickets will be available at the gate and in advance at participating locations and online. To view the advance ticket locations, visit: http://www.bedfordwine.com/page11.html.

The event is rain or shine.
