Historical Talk "Water-Powered Mills of Floyd County" with Ricky Cox:

Date: November 10, 2018
Time: 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Venue: The Floyd Center for the Arts
Description: The Floyd County Historical Society presents the Historical Talk "Water-Powered Mills of Floyd County" with Ricky Cox on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at The Floyd Center for the Arts.

As recently as 60 years ago grist, feed, and flour mills were essential and commonplace parts of the economic and social fabric of rural Southern Appalachian counties like Floyd County, VA. Little more than half a century later, the products of a local, small-scale miller have been priced out of the market, his skills are obsolete, and the tools and machinery he commanded have been relegated to the scrap heap, or the museum.

Of more than 140 water-powered mills that stood in Floyd County between 1770 and the present, fewer than a dozen remain. This illustrated presentation provides an overview of the history and technology of grain milling in our area, and features notable or typical mills and the men and women who built, ran, and finally abandoned these icons of semi-self-sufficient agrarian life.

Admission is free and all are welcome.
