Walk or Talk: Exotic Flowers of Madeira, Portugal:

Date: March 20, 2019
Time: 12:00 - 1:00 PM
Venue: Hahn Horticulture Garden (Virginia Tech)
Description: The Hahn Horticulture Garden at Virginia Tech continues their Walk or Talk series with "Exotic Flowers of Madeira, Portugal" on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 starting at the Peggy Lee Hahn Garden Pavilion.

Madeira is a small island off the west coast of Africa. Its subtropical climate is a gardener’s delight, and plants from all over the world can be grown there. In fact, Madeira’s nickname is the “Isle of Flowers.” Learn a bit about Madeira and enjoy photos of flowers taken in Funchal, the capital.

Our speaker, Mary Rhoades, traveled to Madeira in mid-October of 2018 on a Road Scholar trip, “Walking Madeira.” The main purpose of the trip was to visit the native relic forests of Madeira, the Laurissilva. There were few native flowers to see in October, but the base hotel had extensive grounds with a fantastic array of plants in bloom from many different countries.

Mary Rhoades is the past president of the New River Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society. She is retired from the Dept. of Entomology at Virginia Tech. Her volunteer activities include leading hikes for Claytor Lake State Park, including the spring wildflower walk, First Day Hikes, and the Hike for Hospice.

This talk is free and open to the public. All Wednesday Walk or Talks start at 12:00 pm and will meet at the pavilion. A visitor pass is required to park in the Hahn Garden visitor lot. Come early to grab a pass from the Hahn Garden staff and find a place to park before the talk begins.
