Description:
New River Community College’s Fiddle, Banjo and Dance Club presents Olen and Frances Gardner and The Slate Mountain Ramblers for their February Jamboree located in room 117 in Edwards Hall.

Old-time and early bluegrass musicians Olen and Frances Gardner married in 1975 and according to Olen, have been “playing together pretty much ever since.” They began studio recording in 1976 and have maintained a semi-professional career throughout the years, including several national park service contracts. Olen also spent three years playing with noted bluegrass guitarist Charlie Monroe. Additionally, Olen spent time teaching drafting and design, machine shop and music classes from 1976 to 2001 at NRCC.

The band for the Gardners’ appearance at NRCC will include Johnnie Haskins on fiddle, Olen Gardner on banjo, Frances Gardner on vocals, Wayne Frye on guitar and vocals and Jerry Steinberg on bass.

The Slate Mountain Ramblers band is a family old-time group from Ararat, Va. The members are Richard Bowman on fiddle, his wife Barbara on bass, and their daughter Marsha Bowman Todd on banjo. They are joined by Ted Ashe of Mt. Airy, N.C., on guitar. The band has a winning tradition, placing at various fiddlers’ conventions and the group has traveled as far as Gainsborough, England to share their music.

Corporate sponsors of the jamborees include CVS Pharmacy, Dublin; Pulaski County Patriot, Pulaski; Pepsi Cola Bottling Co.; King's Tire Service, Pulaski; WPSK Radio; Shoney's Restaurant, Dublin; Wade's Supermarket, Dublin; Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce and Trader's Emporium & Estate Jewelry Services, Dublin.

The doors open at 5 pm. There is no charge for admission; however, donations will be accepted to help pay travel expenses for the musicians. The jamborees are held the second Saturday of each month through April at NRCC.
