Description:
Richard D. Brown, secretary of finance for Virginia, will speak at Radford University on Thursday, March 22.
His presentation, titled "Virginia Budget Process: Fiscal Trends and Future Issues," is sponsored by the RU Chapter of the Financial Management Association International (FMA). Brown will speak at 11 a.m. in the auditorium of the Hurlburt Student Center. The event is free and open to the public.
"It is a really motivating opportunity for us to get a real-world perspective from a distinguished leader like Mr. Brown, who is doing what so many of us want to do someday," said student Jennifer Kelly, a junior finance major from Middletown, N.J., and president of the university's FMA chapter.
As a member of Gov. Bob McDonnell's cabinet, Brown is responsible for all financial matters of the Commonwealth and oversees the departments of Planning and Budget, Accounts, Taxation and the State Treasury. Brown was appointed in 2008 by Gov. Tim Kaine and reappointed in 2010 by McDonnell.
A native of Arlington County, Brown holds a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the College of William and Mary and a Master of Commerce degree from the University of Richmond. He began his career with the state in 1971 as an economist with the Division of State Planning and Community Affairs.
The RU chapter of the FMA, advised by Abhay Kaushik, assistant professor of finance, provides opportunities for professional interaction between academicians, practitioners and students. It also promotes the development and understanding of basic and applied research and sound financial practices.
