Radford University will pay tribute to the land of the rising sun with its first Japanese Cultural Awareness in Appalachia Week which includes a film festival and lecture series. The second film is "Rashomon" which will be shown in Cook Hall room 107.

A special introduction to the film will be given by RU Professor Chuck Hayes.

Seven Samurai is a 1954 Japanese adventure drama film co-written, edited, and directed by Akira Kurosawa. The film takes place in 1587 during the Warring States Period of Japan. It follows the story of a village of farmers that hire seven masterless samurai (ronin) to combat bandits who will return after the harvest to steal their crops.

Rashomon is a 1950 Japanese crime drama film directed by Akira Kurosawa, working in close collaboration with cinematographer Kazuo Miyagawa. The film is based on two stories by Ryunosuke Akutagawa — ("Rashomon" provides the setting, while "In a Grove" provides the characters and plot).

Rashomon introduced Kurosawa and the cinema of Japan to Western audiences, albeit to a small number of theaters, and is considered one of his masterpieces. The film won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and also received an Academy Honorary Award at the 24th Academy Awards.

Featuring the film festival and a demonstration of Japanese sword fighting on Wednesday, April 4, the week will also include a series of lectures on contemporary society and cultural issues relating to business, gender and education in Japan. All events are free and open to the public. The aim is to expand the university's focus on international issues.
