Stephen L. Fisher and Barbara Ellen Smith, co-editors of the essay collection "Transforming Places: Lessons from Appalachia," will discuss the book and sign copies on April 5 at Radford University.
"Transforming Places" is a collection of 17 essays by scholars and activists on topics including place, identity and culture; bridging divides between genders; local and global mobilizations; organizing grassroots efforts; and labor rights.
The free public event at 7 pm in Hurlburt Hall rooms 249-250 is sponsored by the university's Appalachian Studies Program.
Fisher is professor emeritus at Emory & Henry College, where he founded and directed the Appalachian Center for Community Service. He is well known as an Appalachian studies scholar and author of the book "Fighting Back in Appalachia: Traditions of Resistance and Change."
Barbara Ellen Smith
Smith is a professor of women's and gender studies at Virginia Tech and a frequent contributor to professional journals, including the Journal of Appalachian Studies. She serves on the advisory board for Faces of Appalachia, an initiative funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities through Marshall University and the Appalachian Studies Association.
