Blacksburg Community Strings performs a spring recital. The concert is free and open to the public.
The program will include a Baroque classic, two historically-based early 20th century works, and the Word Premier of a new work for solo soprano and strings, Deep Woods: the Unicorn Sings to Memory, by New York composer David Wolfson. The work is a setting of poetry by writer Peter Beagle, well known as the author of The Last Unicorn among other fantasy novels. Soloist will be Ariana Wyatt, Visiting Assistant Professor of Voice in the Virginia Tech Department of Music and a graduate of the Juilliard Opera Center with many professional credits in opera and oratorio, including the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
Also featured will be oboist Meredith McCree in Bach’s Concerto for Oboe and String Orchestra in F Major. Works by two English composers, Peter Warlock’s Capriol Suite of dances taken from the 16th century French dance manual by Thoinot Arbeau and Ralph Vaughan-Williams’ Fantasia on the Theme by 16th century English composer Thomas Tallis, will complete the program.
The Blacksburg Community Strings (BCS), a community ensemble of violin, viola, cello and string bass players, was formed in October 1999 and had its debut public performance in December 1999. It is made up of middle and high school students, avocational community players, and active and retired professionals.
