Description:
Watch classic films under the stars outside Virginia Tech's Newman Library facing Torgersen Hall. This evening's films give you a glimpse of the two world wars.
Newman Library has a 16mm film collection of approximately 1600 titles. This collection has been built over the last 60 years, and contains films on subjects ranging from agriculture to metallurgy to war as well as several feature films. There are also several films in the collection that were produced on campus at VT in the 1950s, 60s, 70s, and 80s.
Periodically, we pull select titles from this collection and put them on display in our front yard.
These screenings are free to all, and all are welcome. Pets are welcome too, as long as they're crowd-friendly. Free popcorn will also be available.
Film Information:
The first film, Goodbye Billy! America goes to War, was put together in 1972.
"Surveys the role of the United States in World War I, at home and at the battle fronts. Compiled from authentic war footage; set to vintage sound."
Next, you won't want to miss Victory Harvest, made by the US Government in 1944.
It was made to recruit people to help farmers during the war. Since all the able-bodied men were gone, it was up to volunteers to complete the harvest so everyone could eat, at home and away.
Finally, I will show three short films urging the viewer to buy war bonds. Each one has its own distinctive style.
- Pacific Heroes
- A Message direct from General Eisenhower
- This Could be America
