The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets would like to invite the campus and surrounding community to the Upper Quad on Friday, April 20, for the first "Jazz on the Upper Quad" event.

The Southern Colonels, the Corps of Cadets 18-piece jazz orchestra, will perform from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in front of Lane Hall. They are one of three ensemble groups of the Highty-Tighties, the corps regimental band.

The concert is free and open to all. Blankets and lawn chairs are encouraged.

The group will play music from the big band swing era, Latin, rock, and standards featuring, on vocals Cadet Emma Riegert of Leonardtown, Maryland, a sophomore majoring in political science in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences who is a recipient of the Tom Dobyns Memorial Emerging Leader Scholarship and Cadet Tamiko Krish Acuna of Newport News, Virgnia, a freshman majoring in architecture in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies. Both are members of Air Force ROTC.

Skipper, the Corps of Cadets cannon, will be on display with members of Skipper Crew available to answer questions.

The Corps of Cadets will kick off Family Weekend a few hours earlier with a formal retreat ceremony at 4:45 pm. The ceremony will be held at the flag pole on Upper Quad. The regiment will be formed between Lane, Brodie, and Rasche Halls. The Color Guard will lower the flag, Skipper, the Corps of Cadets cannon, will fire, and the Highty-Tighties, the regimental band, will play.

Following the formal retreat, dinner will be offered at Shultz Dining Hall from 5 to 7 p.m. and is open to all. Flex Plan, Dining Dollars, a Hokie Passport Account or cash can be used to purchase dinner. Members of the community and visiting families are encouraged to come early and enjoy a meal before "Jazz on the Upper Quad."
