Description:
The annual Special Olympics Spring Games Track and Field Competition will be held Saturday, April 21 at Radford University Cupp Stadium. More than 200 Special Olympics athletes from across Southwestern Virginia have been training for the event since February.

Opening Ceremonies, which will begin at 11:00 am, include Dawn Jefferies, WSLS morning anchor, as master of ceremonies, with welcoming comments by Radford City Police Chief Donald Goodman and Special Olympics Virginia Global Messengers Erica Bookout and Bryan Mosby. Track and field events, including basic motor skills, throwing and jumping events, and running events ranging from 50 meters to 3000 meters, will follow the traditional torch lighting ceremony. Events should conclude around 4:00 p.m.

The Spring Games provide an opportunity for students, faculty, and area residents to witness firsthand the spirit of competition and excellence of Special Olympics sports. Radford University students, including many representatives from Radford Athletics teams, will be joined by Virginia Tech students, along with New River Valley community members, to host the games.

Students and community members will also host an Olympic Town area that will introduce new sports and fun activities to the athletes and families.

Special Olympics has launched a “Volunteer 2 Cheer” campaign which brings volunteers together to motivate each individual athlete to do their best in competition. Some volunteers serve as buddies for the day providing encouragement before, during, and after their events. Others are needed to act as officials for the events at the stadium. Our goal for the Spring Games is to recruit 500 volunteers.

The games are free and open to the public. Anyone interested in volunteering for the games should plan to register at Cupp Stadium at Radford University between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. the day of the event. To pre-register for the event or for more information, contact Special Olympics at swoffice@specialolympicsva.org or go to http://www.volunteer2cheer.com.

Special Olympics is an international program of year-round sports training and athletic competition for youth and adults with intellectual disabilities. Join us in cheering on Virginia’s athletes who inspire greatness!
