The Radford Heritage Foundation and Glencoe Museum are pleased to announce the second installment of their Appalachian Lecture Series, which will touch on Scottish-Irish influence in the Appalachian region. The talk “Tracing Our Cultural Roots in Southwest Virginia” will be given by Dr. Grace Toney Edwards at 7:00 pm on Thursday, May 24, 2012.

In her talk, Dr. Edwards will present about the journey that thousands of immigrants took to eventually reach the Appalachian region. The presentation will feature many images showing the Scottish and Irish homelands the immigrants left behind. Dr. Edwards will show comparisons in architecture, foodways, stories, songs, and other customs that continue to link Scottish, Irish, and Appalachian cultures today.

Dr. Grace Toney Edwards is Professor Emeritus of English and Appalachian Studies at Radford University. Retiring in 2010, she was the founding director of the Appalachian Regional Studies Center and chair of the interdisciplinary Appalachian Studies Program. She has been involved with writing and editing over 100 book chapters, articles, essays and reviews that touch on Appalachian heritage and studies. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Radford Heritage Foundation.

The lecture will take place in the Meeting Room of the Radford Public Library on Thursday, May 24, 2012. It will be held from 7:00 to 8:00 pm.
