Description:
Join the Christiansburg Library for a special presentation by VT Professor Dan Thorp about The Beginnings of Black Education in Montgomery County.

Before the Civil War, it was illegal to educate African Americans in Virginia, and after the war former slaves were anxious to establish schools and acquire an education.

Between 1865 and 1871 a number of schools were established for Freedmen in the county, and hundreds of black children and adults attended them.

This lecture will focus on the challenges overcome to establish the first black schools in the county.
