Description:
The Newport Jamboree kicks off the 2012 season with bands The Porch Loungers and Black Twig Pickers on Saturday, June 16 as well as a a special guest appearance by the legendary folk musician Michael Chapman from across the pond in the United Kingdom!

The Porch Loungers are a Blacksburg based band playing a variety of roots and bluegrass music. For more information, visit: http://www.myspace.com/porchloungers

Banjos and fiddles, boards and bones in hand, the Black Twig Pickers dove into a living tradition of old-time music that surrounds their homes in Southwest Virginia and never looked back. Both scholars of the regional sounds and advocates of an ecstatic and highly personal approach to the music, the Twigs hold down local dance and bar gigs, play all manner of celebrations and every so often, hit the road.

At 71, Michael is touring the world constantly, playing guitar better than ever (and leaving a crop of decades-younger finger-stylists stunned in his wake), singing in the same growly baritone he always has, and generally showing the world what a successful life in music might look like. He’s still writing, still finding new folks to play with, still exploring new sounds, still tackling life with a ferocity most 18-year-old punk rockers would gasp at, if only they hadn’t fainted or run off at the first flurry of guitar notes.

In the last few years there's been a giant new wave of attention to Michael, both as one of the last still-standing, still-rocking survivors of the big folk boom of the late '60s/early '70s, and just as a killer musician who more than holds his own in the here and now. There's been a wave of new albums, long profiles in music magazines, and shows on three continents that I know of. There's a big tribute/cover album just out on Tompkins Square with folks like Lucinda Williams, Thurston Moore (and humbly, the Black Twig Pickers) covering his songs.

The Newport Jamboree is scheduled for every 3rd Saturday, June-September at the Village of Newport at the Community Park in Newport (1.3 miles on route 42 off of US 460, on the right).

The local Ruritan chapter will be selling concessions including hot dogs, popcorn and drinks and be sure to bring a lawn chair. We will ask for a $5.00 donation from each adult to cover the bands and park fee-kids under 12 get in free.

Rain or shine! Invite your friends and neighbors!
