Description:
The Live at the Merc Concert Series continues with musicians Brian Smalley and Daisy Millet at the Draper Mercantile.
Brian Smalley and Daisy Millett brought together their respective years of musical experience, training, and song-writing to create a sound that can be defined as not only contemporary folk, but also as newgrass, new-age acoustic, and Americana. This is a very high-energy duo with soulful sounds and highly developed playing skills. They play both original and cover tunes, and have strong Bluegrass influences. Both began their music careers as youngsters.
Brian has four CDs of his original music, including Songs You Can Sing to Your Dog, Mangrove Run, Off Season and Jumper Creek is Dry. Another CD is in the works. In addition to ten years as a DJ, Brian’s played with several bands over the years.
Daisy played for many years in the heartland of Bluegrass music at many Fiddlers Conventions such as Fiddlers Grove in Union Grove, NC. She adopted the upright bass over 15 years ago, and her skills shine in her performances with Brian. She appears on the CDs Hwy19 and Road Rash (HWY19), Come Sunday Morning (Arlan Feiles), and After All (New River Bluegrass).
The onstage presence of Brian & Daisy is always energetic. Brian’s lively playing style is matched by Daisy on upright bass. Olivia’s Coffeehouse owner Olivia Spilotros notes, “The audience actually takes my candles and waves them like they are at a concert!” Public Arts & Music advisor Margie LaRoe says, “Brian Smalley is the only performer I know who plays the guitar with his entire body! If he could fret with his tongue, he would, just so he could play more notes with both hands! Daisy can match bass notes with anything Brian plays and grin while she does it!”
