Come join the Christiansburg Library for a special historic lecture by Daniel Thorp. As a part of the adult summer reading program, the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library is presenting a series of Sharing America programs about the history of the African American communities in Montgomery County.

This lecture will focus on the process by which black churches developed in Montgomery County between 1865 & 1900.

Before the Civil War, many African Americans – both free and slave – belonged to churches in Montgomery County. Methodists, Baptists, and Presbyterians all had mixed-race congregations in which both black and white members worshiped.

This program series was developed and is presented by Daniel Thorp, an Associate Professor of History and Director of the Curriculum for Liberal Education at Virginia Tech. He is the author of a number of articles on a range of topics in eighteenth and nineteenth-century American history and two books: The Moravian Community in Colonial North Carolina and Lewis & Clark: An American Journey. He is currently working on a book about the African American community in Montgomery County between 1850 and 1910.
