Description:
Join the Christiansburg Library for a special historic lecture by Daniel Thorp. As a part of the adult summer reading program, the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library is presenting a series of Sharing America programs about the history of the African American communities in Montgomery County.

This lecture will focus on the origins and development of black neighborhoods and communities between 1865 and 1900. Before the Civil War, there was little racial segregation in Montgomery County. African Americans lived throughout the county, and black and white residents were often neighbors. This pattern began to change with the end of slavery, though, and in the decades that followed African American neighborhoods and communities appeared throughout the county.

This program series was developed and is presented by Daniel Thorp, an Associate Professor of History and Director of the Curriculum for Liberal Education at Virginia Tech. He is the author of a number of articles on a range of topics in eighteenth and nineteenth-century American history and two books: The Moravian Community in Colonial North Carolina and Lewis & Clark: An American Journey. He is currently working on a book about the African American community in Montgomery County between 1850 and 1910.
