Brian and Courtney Williams are a young married couple who have been part of the downtown scene in Blacksburg for a combined 15 years, having worked at Poor Billy’s, Big Al’s, and The Nerv since 2004.
On May 11th of this year, Courtney developed a small abscess on her right calf. Despite the fact that she received immediate medical attention, the
area around the abscess became necrotic and within one week she had an open wound the size of a football on her leg. Although the exact nature of her infection had not yet been diagnosed, doctors attempted a skin graft.
The graft did not take, and to make matters worse, the skin donation site on her left arm and the small wound from the I.V. line on her right arm both became necrotic as well. At this point she was transferred to Duke University Hospital and spent two weeks gravely ill in the ICU before specialists there were able to give her an exact diagnosis.
It turned out she had two disorders: a blood vessel disease called bachette’s and a gangrene-like condition called pyoderma gangranosum. She was finally given an effective treatment regimen, and despite the fact that her prognosis is good it is also very lengthy. Her conditions disqualify her from further skin grafts and she is therefore relying on an experimental stem cell therapy to regrow her skin. The therapy is expected to take months to complete.
