Celebrate the Appalachian Trail with weekend hikes with Mountain Lake. On Saturday, October 13th join Mountain Lake staff members for a free hike to McAfee Knob.

The hiking group will depart Mountain Lake for a full day hike at 8:30 am.

McAfee Knob is one of the most photographed spots on the Appalachian Trail as it winds its way through Virginia. The Knob has an almost 270 degree panorama of the Catawba Valley and North Mountain to the West, Tinker Cliffs to the North and the Roanoke Valley to the East. It is a steady climb North on the A.T. of around 1700’ in about 4.4 miles to the Knob from the VA311 parking area so you will get a good workout.

On a clear day you will have some of the best views in the Southern Shenandoah Valley. Due to its popularity you will not be alone on this hike, but the overhang of McAfee Knob and its views make up for the lack of solitude.

Round-trip is 8.8 miles if returning on the trail. A more leisurely and alternate route is available by walking the un-marked old fire road, which intersects the A.T. 2.7 miles from the VA311 parking lot, making the round-trip approximately 8.3 miles.

These hikes are free and open to the public.

All hikes are guided and transportation is provided for up to 12 participants. A bagged lunch is provided for registered hotel guests for Saturday and Sunday's hikes. Community members joining on the hikes are encouraged to bring their own packed lunch for day hikes, or place an order with the Mountain Lake Conservancy to provide a bagged lunch at a minimal cost.
