Description:
Celebrate the Appalachian Trail with weekend hikes with Mountain Lake. On Sunday, October 14th join Mountain Lake staff members for a free hike to Kelly's Knob.

The hiking group will depart Mountain Lake for a full day hike at 9 am.

Kelly’s Knob is located on a ridge that bridges the valley between John's Creek Mountain and Clover Hollow Mountain. While Kelly Knob is not the highest point on the ridgelet (the high point is densely wooded), it is still much higher than its mountain neighbors, thus affording a fantastic vista of the New River Valley.

The most popular route to Kelly Knob begins at Rocky Gap Trailhead, located on VA 601. From 601, the Appalachian Trail ascends Johns Creek Mountain. This first ½ mile is the most strenuous portion of the hike with an elevation gain of 500’. Near the top of the grade, Johns Creek Mtn. trail splits off to the left and the A.T. follows the ridgeline south to Kelly Knob. Kelly Knob overlook is about 100 yards from the A.T. and is well-marked by a blue-blazed side trail.

After Kelly Knob the A.T. descends about 1000’ to the Laurel Creek shelter. From there it is 2 more miles to VA 42. This section of the A.T. is mostly forested although the last mile passes several farm fields. An old homestead shelter is located near Laurel Creek Shelter.

These hikes are free and open to the public.

All hikes are guided and transportation is provided for up to 12 participants. A bagged lunch is provided for registered hotel guests for Saturday and Sunday's hikes. Community members joining on the hikes are encouraged to bring their own packed lunch for day hikes, or place an order with the Mountain Lake Conservancy to provide a bagged lunch at a minimal cost.
