Description:
Glencoe Museum is pleased to announce that it will host “First Americans: Native Series” by local artist Jerry Frech. In his art, Frech creates powerful and evocative images of Native American culture. Ranging from realistic to abstract, his works capture the essence of Native Americans and their presence in both the past and present.
Glencoe Museum will hold the opening reception for Jerry Frech’s show on September 13, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. There is no admission charge, and the reception is open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
Although not of Native American descent, Jerry Frech is descended from an Indigenous tribe from the Philippines, which he feels provides him with a sense of shared identity with Native Americans. In 2006, Frech was deployed to Iraq where he rediscovered his passion for art, which he then decided to pursue through his studies. He received his undergraduate degree in art from Bluefield College and is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts from Radford University where he is a Graduate Teaching Fellow. He also teaches at Pathway Christian Academy and as a private instructor.
Jerry Frech uses water based mediums, sharpie markers, transparent layers, hand and foot prints, and spontaneous drips of paint, which all help to tell the story he wants to convey. In some cases a handprint or footprint is used to create a vision of where people once tread but are now lost. The focus of Frech’s present series is on the tribes of the East Coast, which Frech points out are still a strong and flourishing culture.
Glencoe Museum is located at 600 Unruh Drive in Radford, VA. The works will be on display through the beginning of November.
