Description:
The Radford Heritage Foundation is pleased to announce that Radford University Associate Professor Carter Turner, PhD, will give a talk as part of its Civil War Lecture Series at the Radford Public Library on Thursday, September 20, from 7:00 to 8:00 pm.
In his talk “Religion and the American Civil War”, Dr. Turner will explore the theological disagreements underlying the American Civil War. Most of the major American Protestant denominations had split, in one way or another, over the issue of slavery and its place in Christianity by the time shots were fired at Fort Sumter. For many, especially the clergy, the Civil War was a continuation of these theological conflicts. This talk will explore the nature of these disagreements, and the northern and southern theological interpretations of the war’s outcome.
Dr. Turner is Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Radford University. A native of Virginia, Dr. Turner graduated from Salem High School, has a history degree from Virginia Tech, and a PhD in religious and theological studies from the University of Denver. He teaches and writes on how religion played a major role in the American Civil War and how religion continues to play a role in sports and politics. Dr. Turner lives in Roanoke County with his wife Karen and their thirteen year-old daughter, Callaway.
The talk is open to the public and there is no admission charge.
