Description:
Judy Smith, senior vice president of employee services at the David J. Joseph Company, will give the Wells Fargo Distinguished Lecture, sponsored by the Pamplin College of Business, on Thursday, October 18th at the Holtzman Alumni Center’s Alumni Assembly Hall.

Smith, whose talk is titled “Traits for Success,” will be joined by two other senior executives from the company — Chris Stout, vice president of trading at the brokerage services division, and Chester Jones, vice president of operations at Advantage Metals Recycling, a wholly owned subsidiary — who will also give presentations.

According to the company, known also as DJJ, it is a world leader in scrap processing and trading, with annual sales of more than $6 billion. It is headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio and has more than 80 facilities in the country and abroad. In business for more than 125 years, it became a subsidiary of Nucor in 2008.

Smith has been in the human resources field for 25 years, the last 20 at DJJ. Her responsibilities include leading the efforts for employee relations, recruiting, benefits, compensation, training, development and succession planning. She has a bachelor’s degree and an MBA from Xavier University.

Stout joined DJJ 18 years ago as a sales representative in Utah. Since then, he has managed the company’s offices in Omaha, Neb., and Birmingham, Ala. In his current role, he is responsible for a team of 40 traders across 11 domestic offices. He has a bachelor’s degree from Weber State University.

Jones joined the Joseph family of companies in 1999. He has held roles with increasing levels of responsibility. Currently based in Kansas City, Mo., he is responsible for more than 13 facilities. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia and Florida Atlantic University.

The event is free and open to the public, no tickets needed. Free parking is available at the Inn at Virginia Tech and Skelton Conference Center. Find more parking information online or call 540-231-3200.
