Description:
Join the Blacksburg Price House Nature Center on Saturday, November 3rd for a special program entitled "Taking care of the birds".
Come early and participate with researchers and students from Virginia Tech Biological Sciences who will be safely netting, marking, and releasing wild birds as part of an ongoing study on social behavior and disease susceptibility in house finches.
In the late 1990's a severe form of bird-pink eye began spreading among these common, backyard birds, decreasing their ability to see and their chances of survival (but don't worry, humans can't catch it!). By marking each bird with an electronic ID tag (the size of a grain of rice), researchers hope to find out which birds are most likely to catch and spread the disease. This information will help in monitoring and better understanding this and other diseases, including those that do threaten humans.
Limited parking is available in the Nature Center Driveway, on Wharton Street, and within two short blocks on Clay Street at spout spring parking strip and along Church Street in the public parking lot.
Admission is free, donations are welcome.
