Description:
A Christiansburg Library presentation will begin the “Thanksgiving Season” by remembering Jamestown instead of Plymouth. Although the first Thanksgiving is widely accepted as having occurred in Massachusetts in 1621, some ten years earlier dinners of Thanksgiving were celebrated in Virginia, and included Captain John Smith, linked in history and imagination to Pocahontas.
On Saturday, November 10 at 11 am, B. Scott Crawford will present a fascinating examination of Alonzo Chappel's 19th century painting entitled "Captain John Smith Saved by Pocahontas". At the conclusion of the presentation, refreshments will be served, based on recipes prevalent in early 16th century England.
At first glance, Chappel’s painting seems to be an engaging depiction of a famous historical event. But, by setting the work in a more accurate historical context, a much deeper meaning begins to emerge. According to Crawford, “This work actuality opens the door to discuss how Americans in the mid 19th century understood the nation's past as well as how they envisioned the nation's future. And, the work directly reflects the sectional strife that had gripped the nation and taken it into the bloodiest war the nation had ever witnessed. Some of the themes the artist explores still resonate in American society today.”
B. Scott Crawford is Vice President for Relationship Development at Member One Federal Credit Union.
