The Blue Ridge Country Dancers present their November Contra Dance featuring the music of Red Mountain and caller Dean Snipes on Saturday, November 10th at the Sun Music Hall.

The dance starts at 8 pm with a beginner lesson at 7:35 pm. Come as you are, wear soft flexible shoes for dancing, and the caller will teach each dance. Come to dance or come to listen - no partner needed.

Red Mountain, a much revered old-time stringband from Alabama, known affectionately as "the Trash," makes a rare appearance in Virginia to headline a fine show and Contra Dance in Floyd, Saturday, November 10, at 8 p.m. at Winter Sun Music Hall & Dogtown Roadhouse.

Red Mountain puts on a show that layers traditional fiddle tunes and old time country and blues in the best tradition of The Skillet Lickers and The Highwoods String band. Add to that a masters course in the old-time fiddlers and their tunes, excellent musicianship, and exquisite vocal harmonies, and you are beginning to get the picture. These folks are good - just a wonderful band - veteran collectors and players of original old-time music.

The dance caller is Dean Snipes from North Carolina, who always makes the walk-thoughs and instruction seem easy and fun. Dean has called dances throughout the Southeast for over twenty years.

Contra dancing is easy relaxed fun, and though the figures are done with a partner, singles are always welcome. Contra dancing is suitable for all ages, in fact the original form of the dance, such as the Virginia Reel, was a popular U.S. folk tradition from about 1830-1890.

Blue Ridge Country Dancers' Contra Dances are held in Floyd on the second Saturday of each month through June.
