Description:
The Jacksonville Center for the Arts offers a multi-day class titled Understanding and Creating Crystalline Glazes with instructor Steve Mitchell from July 17-21 meeting at 9am-5pm daily.
Class Description:
In this 5 day Crystalline Glaze Class we will begin by throwing forms from porcelain along with a foot ring needed in the Crystalline process during the first day. While these forms are drying and bisque firing, on Thursday and Friday, we will be making glazes and talk about the science of growing crystals. On Saturday we will glaze and fire a couple of kiln loads of pots, and on Sunday we will unload and separate the pots as well as put the finishing touches on the bottom. Critique and feedback from success and failure is the most important step in making crystalline pots.
Steve states, “Carefully taking notes and inspecting the results, and reviewing these notes for 3 years, is how I have finally made acceptable crystalline pots. I'll share what I have learned in this class in an effort to speed you toward success.” Steve has graciously agreed to teach this class for a nominal fee, therefore The Jax is able to offer this intense ceramic experience for almost half the regular cost for a class of this length.
