Description:
Mountain Lake Biological Station (MLBS) is happy to announce the renewal of its open house tradition on Saturday, July 13th from 2-4 pm.
Typically the station is only open to the public by appointment, so the open house is a unique opportunity for the local community to meet our scientists, learn first-hand about Station research, and understand how this research advances science and benefits the natural world.
The open house will also showcase ArtLab at MLBS, an innovative program that brings visual artists and scientists together for mutual inspiration. Activities will include tours of MLBS facilities and laboratories, exhibits by current researchers and artists, guided hikes highlighting the flora and fauna of Salt Pond Mountain, kids' games, and old-time country music by The Jugbusters. Please join us for an afternoon of education and exploration in nature’s classroom!
The Mountain Lake Biological Station is located at 240 Salt Pond Road in Pembroke, VA.
Directions:
From either Interstate 81 (exit 118B) or 77 in Virginia, take U.S. Rte 460 toward Blacksburg and Virginia Tech. Once you are in Giles County, take State Rte. 700 or 613 up the mountain (NW) toward the Mountain Lake Resort Hotel. State Routes 700 and 613 merge at the top of the mountain at the Hotel.
Enter the hotel grounds and continue NNE on State Road 613 for 1.6 miles. You will pass through the Hotel grounds and along the west shore of the lake, and the road will turn to gravel. Follow SR 613 until you reach a fork in the road; take the right fork onto SR 668, following the sign to "Biological Station." When you reach the Station entrance, you will see a brown welcome sign. Take the right fork at the entrance. Park in the large gravel lot near the large barn-like building.
