Description:
The Third Annual Great Road Encampment featuring an 18th Century Encampment (1700-1799) will be held at Eastern Montgomery Park on Saturday, August 3rd (9am-5pm) and Sunday, August 4th (9am-4pm).
The Great Road Encampment features demonstrations and presentations by 18th Century reenactors including presentations on The Great Road which went through the New River Valley, the Virginia Company of Roger's Rangers, a detached military hospital and medicine of the time and Native American stories with Vicky Ferguson.
Demonstrations include:
• Flintlock Muskets
• Knife and Tomahawk Throwing
• Camp Cooking
• Leather Work
• Blacksmithing
• 18th Century Clothing
• Spinning and Weaving
and lots more.
The Great Road was the main thoroughfare going west to the Frontier. It was traveled by the likes of George Washington, Daniel Boone, Andrew Lewis, William Preston, Adam Harman, the Ingles and Draper families. This event honors all who passed through the valleys of Southwest Virginia in the quest for a better life.
The event is rain or shine and admission is free.
Eastern Montgomery Park is located at 5001 Enterprise Drive in Elliston, Virginia beside the Elliston Fire Department.
The event is sponsored by the Montgomery County Parks and Recreation and Fort Vause Outfitters.
